For Affordable Lap Band Surgery Houston Should Be Given Priority

By Cynthia Stewart

The whole world, particularly the US is plagued with obesity as more and more people continue to be affected by the problem. Researchers continuously work around the clock to find a permanent solution to this plague, but no on-size-fits-all solution has been invented yet. One of the solution that have been put forward is the lap band surgery. With this surgical procedure, an inflatable silicone device gets installed on the stomach.

Other names for the inflatable silicone gadget installed on the stomach are LAGB, A band, lap-band, and laparoscopic adjustable gastric band. The goal of this bands is to cut down on how much one is capable of consuming. This goal is attained by reducing the rate at which food absorption takes place in the stomach. To have a better understanding of lap band surgery Houston should be the city to consider visiting. This procedure is one of the bariatric surgeries used to treat obesity.

This method of managing obesity is used on people whose body mass index (BMI) is above 40. There are certain medical conditions that improve when people lose weight. They include diabetes, high blood pressure, metabolic syndrome, GERD, sleep apnea, and osteoarthritis among many others. In such cases, people whose BMI is between 35 and 40 qualify for the surgical operation.

The FDA increased the bracket of viable candidates for this process. The required BMI value was lowered from 35 to 30 for people who have a weight-related health condition. For safety reasons, this procedure is only recommendable after all other ways of managing obesity have failed to work. Alternative methods for managing obesity are lifestyle and diet changes and exercise. As such, this is a last resort approach.

The process involves pacing the device around the upper portion of the stomach so as to create two pouches, the upper and lower pouches. The upper pouch is usually smaller in size compared to the lower one. With the smaller pouch in place, the amount of food one can consume in a single meal is limited, causing one to have a feeling of satiety when peptide YY is released. This process does not reduce gastric emptying time.

One cannot achieve sustained weight loss simply by installing the bands only. Other measures have to be taken including limiting food intake, consuming health foods, and reducing appetite for food. There are many risks involved and the process is very complex that it is not considered the best approach for treating obesity. It is painful and has several risks. However, a comparison between lap band surgery and other bariatric surgeries indicates that the former is less invasive.

Complete reversal of this process can be done through a keyhole operation. During the surgery, re-routing of intestines is not necessary and portions of the stomach are not stapled or eliminated. Proper installation of the bands leads to normal absorption of food afterwards. The process does not affect the process of food absorption in any way.

Fully biocompatible materials are used in making the bands. For that reason, there is no time limit on how long they can stay in the body because they are incapable of causing harm. Anyone who has undergone abdominal surgical procedure before cannot be operated again because it is too risky. Such people are not ideal candidates.
