Tubal Reversal Surgery And What The Procedure Involves

By Gregory Kelly

Tubal ligation is the procedure which is used in restoring fertility in women who had tubal ligation. The procedure of tubal ligation involves blockage or cutting of Fallopian tubes in order to prevent pregnancy from occurring. For the reversal procedure, there will be re-connection of segments that were blocked to remaining sections of the Fallopian tubes. When it comes to tubal reversal surgery, it is important to clearly understand what the procedure involves.

The treatment is done so that women are able to get pregnant without them having to consider other medical treatments. It should however be noted that it is not ideal for all people and there are factors that will affect its success. Some of the factors which will be considered are the length of the tubes that remaining, body mass index and age of the individual, extent of Fallopian tube damage and the type of tubal ligation that was used.

The probability of having a successful procedure will depend on the Fallopian portions that are healthy. In addition to that, it will work best for people who had the procedure done using clips or rings, as compared to those that had it done by burning. There are various risks that one should expect. For instance, the person could end up not getting pregnant again. This is so because level of success depends on age and other factors.

There are other complications like infections, bleeding and scarring of the Fallopian tube. For some women, there will be an increased probability of having ectopic pregnancy. This is what what happens when after fertilization the egg gets implanted outside of the uterus. The embryo will be implanted within the Fallopian tubes. The complications and risks should be discussed before the procedure can be started.

The reversal surgery can be done as an outpatient or inpatient procedure. The doctor will use a laparoscopic equipment to make very small incisions within the abdomen. After the incisions are made, the tubes get reattached. The laparoscopic equipment used are very small tubes which are attached to tiny cameras and several other surgical equipment. The doctor will remove blocked fragments before attempting to repair the tubes through the use of very tiny stitches.

After the treatment is done, one is able to resume normal activities gradually. This could take a couple of weeks. The stitches that are used dissolve and never need to be removed. A patient should ask the doctor when the follow up appointment will be required. The rates of success will be varied from one individual to another.

Before you decide to go for the tubal ligation reversal, you need to know what it will cost. Insurance does not cater for the costs in many cases. Generally, you should expect to part with some several thousand dollars, which includes cost of surgery and tests that will be required.

An alternative to tubal ligation reversal is IVF, which is in vitro fertilization. This involves taking the egg of a woman and having it fertilized with a sperm. The fertilization happens outside the womb. After fertilization, the egg will be placed within the womb.
